SanjeevanamThe moment a hurt animal is finally seen
In Tamil, Sanjeevanam means revival — to bring something back to life and strength. It is the right word for what happens when a dog who has been lying injured on a street for days is picked up, assessed and given care. Not just treatment. The act of being brought back.

Whatever brought them here, they are not turned away
Some arrive after a road accident, a leg at a wrong angle, unable to move. Some arrive burning with fever, having been sick for longer than anyone noticed. Some arrive with wounds so advanced that most clinics would hesitate. Our veterinary team does not hesitate. Every street animal that comes to us gets a full clinical assessment, a treatment plan and someone who will follow through.
Over the years, the range of cases we have managed has been wide — wider than most people expect from a street animal welfare programme. No case is too complex. No animal is turned away.
- •Road traffic accidents — fractures, pelvic injuries, spinal trauma
- •Bite wounds — deep infected wounds from territorial fights
- •Wounded by humans — cruelty and negligence cases requiring medical and rehabilitative care
- •Maggot wounds — advanced tissue damage requiring extensive care
- •Tick fever — a common but potentially fatal blood-borne disease
- •Mange — severe skin infections causing hair loss and pain
- •Pyometra — life-threatening uterine infections requiring emergency surgery
- •Tumours — benign and malignant growths requiring surgical intervention
- •Eye injuries — corneal ulcers, trauma and infections
- •Orthopaedic cases — fractures, ligament injuries and mobility impairments
- •Neurological cases — head trauma, paralysis and seizure disorders
- •Kidney and liver disease — chronic and acute organ management
- •Neonatal care — orphaned and critically ill puppies and kittens
- •Geriatric care — ageing street animals with multiple health challenges
- •Respiratory infections — pneumonia and severe upper respiratory disease
Our tick fever treatment program
Many dogs brought to us through our CNVR (Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) program suffer from underlying medical conditions that would otherwise go unnoticed. One of the most common is Tick Fever, a potentially serious blood-borne infection transmitted by ticks.
As part of our integrated approach, dogs identified with symptoms undergo clinical assessment and treatment alongside their sterilization and vaccination procedures wherever possible. Early intervention helps prevent severe complications such as anaemia, weakness, bleeding disorders and long-term illness. This program has enabled hundreds of street dogs to return to their territories healthier, stronger and better protected against future disease.
A street dog suffering from disease cannot advocate for itself. Timely treatment reduces suffering, prevents disease progression, improves survival and enhances the quality of life — for the individual animal and for community dog populations as a whole.

The people who show up with us
A street animal does not come with insurance or a referral. Getting them the right care — quickly, consistently, across the full range of what they need — takes more than one organisation working alone. Sanjeevanam works because the right veterinary partners chose to work with us:
- •The Ark 24hr Veterinary Clinic
- •Doctor Cat
Together, these partnerships let us manage cases that span the full spectrum — from routine infections to emergency surgery — without an animal waiting longer than necessary. We are actively working to establish a dedicated veterinary facility at the shelter so that the care can come to the animal, not the other way around.
We are hiring veterinary doctors
We are looking for experienced veterinary doctors who are passionate about animal welfare and committed to providing high-quality care to street animals. Working with Sanjeevanam offers exposure to a remarkable variety of medical and surgical cases rarely encountered in routine practice.
